Unreasonable reasons

Supreme court ruling appeared in today’s news paper: “A woman’s nude picture in a publication could not per se be termed obscene under IPC or Indecent Representation of Women ( Prohibition) Act, 1986.”
Reason for the above ruling: “unless it has the tendency to arouse the feeling or revealing an overt sexual desire”.

I could have picked up any other article from the news paper to drive the point that for any action, inaction, statement, ruling, tendency, feeling - there would be a reason behind. I just picked this item deliberately to start the day a bit spicy!

Yes, for anything and everything, there will be a reason behind. Reason is real. Reason is omnipresent.

Once, my friend Namboodiri with his servant Rama was going for a walk. He found a guy alone thrashing 4 people and beating them badly. Namboodiri thought it is a good idea to hire him so that he can be his body guard. Gundan, that was his name, has readily agreed to Namboodiri’s proposal. A month went by, there was no much action required from Gundan, but for eating lots of Veg food and doing some ground exercises. The day came. Namboodiri, was going to visit his 9th wife’s place, a few miles away. Of course with Rama and this time with Gundan as well. They had to go through a forest. Two thieves came and robbed everything and went off. Gundan didn’t move an inch, he was standstill watching all the fun. Namboodiri, really got angry “ Why didn’t you beat them and chase them away like what you did the other day?”. Gundan replied, “There was no reason for me to get angry today. That day was different, those idiots had told all sorts of bad words about me and my dad”. Namboodiri lost 10 Kgs of gold, 60 Kgs of rice, 40 Kgs of pulses, 90 Kgs of vegetables- gold to those two thugs and rest all to feed Gundan for a month!

Only crying baby gets milk! We were taught how to demand things loudly to get them fulfilled. But please make sure that you clearly articulate the reason while crying. Else, like the baby, all the time you will be fed with only milk whenever you cry, irrespective of the reason behind it!

If you ask someone how he/she started smoking, he/she would say “No reason, it all started for fun”. As if having fun is not a good enough reason. And if you ask him/her when you would quit it,” I am yet to find a good reason to stop it”.

One may reason wrongly due to lack of experience. I had 4 colleagues, A B C D. Thick friends. They used to go to Sreeraj lazzy parlour on St Marks Road to have Kulfis, regularly. A, B and C got married in a span of 3 months. D remained as a bachelor. Days went by, months went by, 2 years went by. They did not stop the Kulfi habit though. A was blessed with twin baby girls. 2 months down the lane, B was blessed with twin baby boys. D could not believe, another few months down the lane, C also got blessed with twin baby girls! D told them in a subsequent Kulfi session “Looks like the reason behind having twin babies is eating these Kulfis regularly”. C promptly replied “You seem to be inexperienced. Eating Kulfi alone won’t help, you need to do much more fundamental and natural things to achieve that!”. One can conduct a study and publish a report like this - “ In a recent study on 99 couples who had twin babies in Shimoga, it is found that 73% of the husbands used to have Kulfis and 36 % of them used to have the Kulfis late in the evening which resulted in male twins”. Another reason to have or not to have Kulfis, regularly!

Reasons can vary with time for the same activity. I started writing narrating small incidents, just to kill time while relaxing after a walk in the park. People started telling me, I should blog. Started blogging, not only because I enjoy it. Not only because my readers like it. Main reason is while I walk for an hour in the morning, I think about only what I would write that day. That is one such occasion when I don’t think of the present and worry about only future ! But it helps, I stopped looking at the watch every 5 minutes to check whether today’s quota of walking is over or not. Who knows, in the future the reason for me to write could be to earn some money. If that happens, I assure you I will give a treat to all who have been giving me feedback! Good reason for you to do that !

Reasons can be many. I found a person today in the park. He just overtook me while I was walking. For a moment I thought both his hands were wrongly fixed to his body. He was walking with his hands folded backwards in a perfect Namaste position. (I presume all know what “normal” Namaste means, just remember the posture of that hostess while you are boarding the airplane of multi-crore loss making Air India ). One reason why he was doing that could be it helps to stretch the lungs and muscles, may be part of yoga he practices. Another reason could be he feels good when he is demonstrating some unique skill that others do not have. Or it could be just to greet somebody who is behind him – at his front he can at least give a smile to greet, but he cannot do much with his stupid back to somebody who is behind right?

There could be number of reasons to argue a point, but try to limit them to a vital few to make a good impact. When you are in a negotiation the chances of you winning reduces considerably when you list down so many reasons. It will just dilute your point.

Finally, listen to what you are telling to yourself or to others. If you have told “I don’t see any reason to continue like this in this situation” ( the “situation”  can be life, job, marriage, education or any such thing ) at least three times this week, then it is high time you should act. Reflect yourself as what are the reasons behind this statement by you. If needed consult with somebody whom you trust. Then take corrective action immediately. Otherwise you will continue to be in that situation endlessly (for no reason !!!!!).
